With 2012 heading into its final stretch, major movie studios are looking ahead to 2013 and jockeying for prime position for significant titles that either are entering post-production or wrapped months ago and just want to find their way to the big screen. The summer season blockbusters tend to stake their claim early, so we already know that Summer 2013 will kick off with Iron Man 3 on May 3. The Hangover Part III and Fast & Furious 6 have laid claim to Memorial Day weekend. Johnny Depp’s The Lone Ranger will be our July 4 adventure.

To that ever-shifting release-date calendar, Universal has added three new dates that you’ll want to note. Mama is a supernatural thriller produced by Guillermo del Toro. It stars Jessica Chastain in the story of two little girls who go missing the night that their mother was murdered. When they emerge from hiding years later, they find that they still must contend with a mysterious force. Mama will open on Jan. 18, 2013, competing against Broken City and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand.

Tom Cruise’s sci-fi thriller Oblivion, which he’s filming in Iceland with director Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy), was set to open on April 26, but Universal moved it forward two weeks to April 12, and revealed that it now will play on IMAX screens where available.

Finally, Ron Howard’s busy filming Rush, a Formula-1 drama starring Chris Hemsworth as English racer James Hunt. The movie documents his heated rivalry with fellow driver Niki Lauda (Dabiel Bruhl). Howard’s film co-stars Olivia Wilde and Alexandra Marie Lara. Perhaps thinking it might have an awards contender on its hands, Universal has set a Sept. 20, 2013 release date for Rush, Howard’s first film since 2011’s The Dilemma.

While we’re at it, here’s the first official image from Rush, courtesy of the film’s official site.
