Although she has kept herself busy as the resident Black Widow for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Scarlett Johansson has become quite familiar with other avenues of the action genre. From movie to movie she always seems to not only inhabit a completely different character, but take on an entirely different appearance as well. A new image of Scarlett Johansson from the upcoming Ghost in the Shell adaptation has just been released, and it’s as beautiful as it is mysterious. Check out the photo below to see for yourself.

The above photo comes to us courtesy of Paramount Pictures. It showcases Scarlett Johansson as the film’s lead character, Motoko Kusanagi, as she stares out a window into her high tech, urban world. Just from this one photo it’s abundantly clear that the filmmakers have done their homework in order to ensure that the Ghost in the Shell live-action movie bears a strong physical resemblance to the manga that fans have come to know and love.
Fans of Ghost in the Shell have longed to see a feature length film adaptation of the beloved manga series for years. Taking place in a dystopian “cyberpunk” future, the story centers on a member of a special forces police unit dedicated to keeping the world safe from technology centered crimes. The story of the upcoming film will follow Scarlett Johansson’s Motoko Kusanagi as she investigates a mysterious bombing a year after the end of the fourth World War.
As excited as we are for the upcoming Ghost in the Shell adaptation, that hasn’t prevented the film from drawing its own fair share of controversy. The film has made no effort to hide its Japanese roots, which irked many die-hard fans when it was revealed that white actress Scarlett Johansson would portray the lead. White-washing of this nature has become incredibly common, as well as incredibly reviled among many members of the movie going populace, so it remains to be seen whether or not this issue will mar Ghost in the Shell's release when it hits theaters next year.
