Star Trek Into Darkness Final Trailer: Kirk And John Harrison Get Personal

Did anyone really think we were going to see anything new from Star Trek Into Darkness before it came to theaters on May 17? J.J. Abrams is so famously secretive, and there have been so many trailers and TV spots already, from the first trailer that went heavy on Benedict Cumberbatch's foreboding voiceover to the Super Bowl spot to the zillion variations on the international trailer to the latest spot that debuted during the MTV Movie Awards. Here we are going on and on about how J.J. Abrams wants to keep everything secret, and yet we're being bombarded with footage at every turn.

Remarkably enough this latest trailer-- which debuted at Apple-- does manage to show off new footage, in highlighting the fact that the destruction wrought by John Harrison becomes a very personal conflict between him and Chris Pine's Captain Kirk. We know Kirk is a hothead, and we know he doesn't respond well to challenges, so it's no surprise to see him running off into danger even when Bones (Karl Urban) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) warn him against it. We've been told from the very beginning that Harrison's threat was personal to Kirk, but it's interesting to see it spelled out here, especially since it seems to lead directly to the destruction of the Enterprise we've been seeing in most of the trailers.

Did I need this new-- and blessedly final-- trailer? Not at all; I've been fiercely anticipating this movie since the first Star Trek, and someone could spoil the whole thing for me and I'd still be lined up. But it is interesting to learn just this little bit of new information about it, and to have a chance to see Benedict Cumberbatch's glowering face in the middle of a dull Tuesday. It doesn't make the wait any easier, but at least nose we're confident we really won't see more of this movie until we're settled in the dark theater on May 17.
