Superman May Avoid A Direct Fight With Batman, According To Henry Cavill

In case it hasn’t been drilled into your head enough, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will have the titular heroes fight each other. Reminiscent of their battle in the graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, Bruce Wayne will wear high-tech armor so he can personally brawl what he believes to be an alien threat, while Clark Kent, with his eyes glowing red, looks fairly pissed off in the teaser trailer. According to Henry Cavill, though, Earth’s Kryptonian adoptee will do his best to avoid going head-to-head with Gotham City’s protector.

While appearing at the GQ Style and Dunhill party this past Sunday, Cavill told WWD that when the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight cross paths next year, the former may try to avoid directly fighting the latter, citing Superman’s enormous power. He said:

Superman wouldn’t get into a cage fight with just anyone. Imagine, you wouldn’t get into a fight with someone if they hit you and you didn’t feel it, barely registered it. Superman wouldn’t even notice; he’s not quick to engage.

Anyone remotely familiar with Superman knows that most normal humans can’t harm him, so Cavill’s observation about not feeling a punch is astute. That said, Batman is by no means an normal human, and while Superman may try to avoid a direct fight, that doesn’t mean he’ll be successful. One report says that in addition to donning his bulky armor, Batman will also wield a Kryptonite spear in the fight. Presumably Superman doesn’t know Kryptonite exists (though he did feel similar, weakening effects in Man of Steel), so he would certainly be taken by surprise if he found that a strange green rock was negatively impacting him. Still, this is an alien whose many powers include super speed, so even though Kryptonite is lethal to him, if he keeps his distance, he should be okay, though Batman probably has a contingency for that as well.

Despite Superman’s hesitance to engage in a direct conflict, we do know, at minimum, the two will fight in close quarters, at least briefly. Fans who went to the IMAX screening of the film’s teaser trailer in April were awarded with additional footage of the two charging at each other in what looked like an abandoned warehouse.Whatever happens in this fight, let alone whoever the victor is, at least we can take comfort knowing this animosity between Batman and Superman isn’t permanent. After all, they have teaming up to do with other superheroes for Justice League: Part One in 2017.

We’ll see these two heroes clash when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
