Top Gun Returns To Theaters For Limited 3D IMAX Release

Top Gun is making a return to theaters. What's more, those who love seeing Tom Cruise' Maverick take flight will get to see it happen in IMAX 3D come next year when Tony Scott's 1986 action drama returns to theaters for a limited engagement ahead of its Blu-ray release.

A classic film of the 80s, Top Gun stars Tom Cruise as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, who - along with his wingman Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) - gets the opportunity to train at the Navy's Fighter Weapons School. Amidst the competitive nature of his training is a rivalry with Val Kilmer's Tom "Iceman" Kasansky and a romance between Maverick and one of the instructors (played by Kelly McGillis).

Paramount Pictures made the announcement today that Top Gun, which has been remastered for IMAX 3D, will return to select IMAX theaters for an exclusive six-day 3D engagement, starting February 8, 2013. The re-release into theaters has been timed to fall just ahead of the film's debut on Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray 2D. The two-disc set is due out February 19, 2013.

Part of the mass appeal of Top Gun is that there's a little something for everyone, with masculine rivalry and military planes contributing to some great flight scenes, added to the drama, comedy and romance worked into the story. The timing for the film's brief return to theaters seems right, not only because it coincides with with the Blu-ray release, but it's also because it'll be arriving in theaters just in time for Valentine's Day, for those couples with a craving for some nostalgic action and/or a need for speed.

Here's some additional information on the Blu-ray set:

The “TOP GUN” Blu-ray 3D disc presents the film with pristine high definition picture and sparkling sound in spectacular 3D for the ultimate home viewing experience. The Blu-ray 2D includes the re-mastered film in high definition, along with a six-part documentary on the making of the movie, a behind-the-scenes featurette, interviews with Tom Cruise, commentary by producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Tony Scott, co-screenwriter Jack Epps, Jr. and more. The two-disc set available for purchase also includes a digital copy of the film and will be enabled with UltraViolet technology.
