Trailer Trash - 04/14/04

Trailers are better than posters. Trailers have flashy lights and loud music to convince you that a film is good even if it is not. Sometimes trailers have no flashy lights and very little music - this means you must take them more seriously than trailers with with flashy lights and loud music and they should be considered for Oscars.

Sometimes trailers like to pretend they are actually part of those really annoying 20 minutes of advertisments you have to sit through before you get to see the actual feature. Some are actually really cleverly done and might be better than the movie itself like Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Some are thrown together to cash in on the good ones like The Stepford Wives and are really really bad.

Lets look at what candy the film studios have been tempting you kiddies with this week...

Thunderbirds

Released: 6th August 2004

Back in the 60s puppets were cool. They were the CGI of the hippy-stoner era. Now we laugh at puppets and our parents growl at us that the quality of the actual stories was better than "the crap you kids watch nowadays" which may be true. The new Thunderbirds movie has CGI instead of puppets and looks now less like campy fun and more like Spy Kids Lite. Blech.

Walking Tall

Released: 2nd April 2004

Not many people will realise or care that The Rock's next outing is a remake of a "hixploitation" film from the 70s which featured the fat american from the Brosnan 007 movies in the lead role. Who would care... this version has The Rock as a badass Sheriff! And he weilds a 2x4 instead of a gun! Now that's good watchin'.

Hellboy

Released: 2nd April 2004

Ron Perlman is unique. He gives hope to all who may have been smoten by the ugly stick that they may still make it big in Hollywood. It is of note, however, that his two biggest roles (Hellboy and 80s TV melodrama Beauty and the Beast) both involved him wearing heavy prosthetic make up. Coincidence, no? Anyway, Hellboy may not be the ground-breaking pant-wetting revolution some may proclaim, but it does look damn good fun.

The Ladykillers

Released: March 26th 2004

Tom Hanks is back doing what Tom Hanks does best. No, not collecting Oscars. Comedy. With the Coen brothers. Lookin for all the world like a reject from a KFC commercial audition he stars as the head of a gang of theives plotting a massive heist. When things go wrong they must try and dispose of their snooping landlady, which turns out to be a much harder task than it sounds.
