The real star of the rebooted Planet of the Apes movies has always been Andy Serkis and his motion capture performance as the chimpanzee Caesar. Certainly helping to move the plot forward, however, will be the presence of humans - and now we know who will be playing one of them in the upcoming War of the Planet of the Apes. According to new reports, it's a gig that belongs to young actor Gabriel Chavarria.
Deadline doesn't really have any details about the part he will be playing in the Matt Reeves-directed blockbuster, but offers that he will be one of two human leads in the movie and that the size of the part is akin to James Franco's in Rupert Wyatt's Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The new sequel is gearing up to start production soon, but at this point Chavarria is the only actor known to have a part in the movie other than Andy Serkis.
Gabriel Chavarria began his on-screen career back in 2007 with a role in the Hilary Swank-starring drama Freedom Writers, but has spent most of his time on the small screen. After single episode performances in series like Southland, Prime Suspect and Major Crimes, he got a regular job starring as Jacob Aguilar on the show East Los High. In the coming months we may see him start to break out, as he has a key role opposite Demian Bichir in director Ricardo de Montreuil's Low Riders. With War of the Planet of the Apes now on his upcoming slate, he's definitely become a name to watch.
At this time, there haven't been any official details released about the plot of the new sequel, though War of the Planet of the Apes gives us a solid lead to what it will all be about. The most obvious speculation is that the titular 'War' will be between apes and humans - officially wiping Homo sapiens off the map for good. There is another possibility, however. Given that humans are all but wiped out by the time Dawn of the Planet of the Apes begins, it's hard to imagine them standing much of a chance against their furry foes. For this reason, I kind of hope that the film will see a rise in conflict between gorillas and chimps in addition to conflict with humans. We may not know the details of the story for a while now, however.
War of the Planet for the Apes is on pace to be in theaters on July 14, 2017, and production is expected to begin in October. Stay tuned for more details!
