Terminator 2 Is Coming Back To Theaters, Get The Details

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Terminator 2: Judgment Day was an incredibly popular film in its day, in large part due to the state of the art special effects used. If you're curious how well they've held up on the big screen, you're about to get your chance to find out. The movie is going to be rereleased, but this isn't some simple throwback night at the movies. When T2 returns, it will do so with the full 3D treatment. the movie is set for a release sometime in 2017.

This new information came by way of the official Facebook page for Terminator 2, who took yesterday, the anniversary of the date when Skynet became self-aware, to release the first poster announcing the 3D conversion of the film. James Cameron's special effects in Terminator 2: Judgement Day were quite amazing for 1991. The director also did a great deal to popularize 3D with his film Avatar. It makes some sense that he would want to go back and add the one technology to the other.

While the Terminator franchise is on its fifth installment, many fans will tell you that the series hit a high point with Terminator 2: Judgment Day, as since then the films have been, less than stellar. The latest entry, Terminator: Genisys tried to capture the energy of the first film by using its time travel mechanics to start the story over again. They, had some trouble, making that work.

It will be interesting to see how Terminator 2 works with a conversion to 3D. Most big summer blockbusters are given 3D treatments. Certainly, if T2 was being made today, it would be made as a 3D presentation. Having said that, because the film wasn't designed to be made with modern 3D, it's possible that some of the movie might not translate well. While most 3D movies today are converted to 3D after filming, they're still shot with the understanding that the movie will have to undergo the process. Since that was never a concern for James Cameron, it means getting the 3D right could be a little tricky. Of course, if done right, seeing those early digital effects in 3D could potentially make them as stunning in 3D as they were the first time we saw them.
