It's becoming increasingly unclear if Daniel Craig will once again return to reprise the role of James Bond, something he once described as being not too favorable. All of this uncertainty has given rise to new wish lists regarding which actor should step into the designer shoes of Bond. And one of the actors who seems to come up the most is Tom Hardy. It's easy to see the actor in the classic role, and in this hypothetical situation Hardy knows exactly who he'd like to direct him: Christopher Nolan. Um, yes, please.
Tom Hardy recently made a return to TV with FX's revenge drama Taboo (which Hardy developed with his father), and the actor sat down The Daily Beast to discuss the series. Hardy as a potential candidate for a new Bond was also discussed. Christopher Nolan has said in the past that he would love to make a Bond film, and Hardy would definitely be down for joining him on that project.
You know, there's a saying amongst us in the fraternity of acting, and in the fellowship of my peer group, that if you talk about it you're automatically out of the race. So I can't possibly comment on that one! If I mention it, it's gone. But Chris Nolan, what a fantastic director for a Bond movie. Because Daniel [Craig] is so good, and what [Sam] Mendes and Barbara [Broccoli] have done has been so impressive, that it would be a very hard reimagination to follow after. I wonder what the next installment of that franchise would become, and I think when you mention someone like Christopher Nolan, that's a very powerful figure to bring into that world who could bring something new and create something profound---again.
Daniel Craig's new Bond films breathed new life into a franchise that had stalled in recent years ,and elevated it to a height that Bond has rarely experienced. Casino Royale, with its serious take on realistic action and personal drama, was a huge departure from what audiences were used to seeing from Bond, and it's worked out extremely well. But after four films, it looks like it's finally time for new blood. Tom Hardy is totally right when he says that Christopher Nolan could be the guy to rejuvenate Bond once again, much like Casino Royale did.
Christopher Nolan is one of the best directors working today (or ever), and Tom Hardy has proven himself as a capable character actor who knows how to kick ass. This pairing in a Bond film would be great to see, but only time will tell if the two will ever get the chance to do it.
In the meantime, you can check out Nolan's latest film Dunkirk, in theaters July 21, 2017. You can also see Hardy on Taboo, airing weeknights on Tuesday at 10 p.m. EST on FX.
