One of the great unanswered questions of Hollywood at the moment is, what's the story with James Bond? There has been an infinite amount of speculation about who will play the role next, even while it's never been confirmed that Daniel Craig is stepping down. Now, a new report is claiming that Craig has very nearly been convinced to hang around to make one final movie.
The report comes from anonymous sources to Page Six and while they are apparently hearing this from multiple places, we should still take it all with a grain of salt. Still, if the report is to be believed, Barbara Broccoli, the producer of the James Bond franchise, has apparently been trying to convince Daniel Craig to play James Bond one more time and while it appears no deal has yet been signed, Craig is reportedly "just about persuaded" to return.
While never coming out and saying for certain that he would not be back, Daniel Craig's responses to the question following the release of Spectre intimated that he wasn't really interested in playing James Bond again. However, it seems that Barbara Broccoli producing Craig's off-Broadway version of Othello may have gone far in making the actor more open to her requests. This makes it sound like if Craig does come back it's because he wants to return a favor that she did for him.
One thing that is being clearly framed in these reports is that if Daniel Craig does return it would be for a "final" performance as James Bond, meaning that we won't be having this same conversation in two years after the next James Bond movie comes out, because Craig will certainly be done at that point.
Of course, even if Daniel Craig does come back, the fact that we know it will be the last time will clearly not end the ongoing conversation of who will take over. At this point, essentially every English actor between 20 and 40 has been rumored as a potential James Bond. Everyone from Tom Hardy to Tom Hiddleston, and even a few guys not named Tom, have had their names attached to the part. We'd expect that all of those names will be in the mix again when it comes time to recast Bond, along with anybody new who breaks out between now and then.
We know that the writers behind Skyfall and Spectre, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, have been brought back to pen the script for the next James Bond film and rumors about the film's location have already started. It seems that everybody is clearly ready to get moving on the next film, though pre-production can only go so far until you have an actor cast in the lead.
