Charlize Theron as Cipher

15 years in, and the Fast and the Furious franchise has only increased in popularity and box office appeal. What started as a series of films about racing cars has quickly grown into one of the most over the top and consistently profitable action franchises of all time. And aside from the diverse ensemble of heroes that make up Dom's crew, the villains are also captivating, and often return for more than one appearance. Charlize Theron's Cipher received positive attention after the release of The Fate of the Furious, but would the Academy Award winning actress be down to reprise her role? Signs point to yes.

Charlize Theron has been doing a fair amount of press to promote her upcoming brutal action flick Atomic Blonde. When asked by Variety about the possibility of returning as Cipher in a future Fast film, she said:

Look, I love everybody at Universal. We're going to have conversations. We'll see where it goes.

Well, this is hopeful. While not a concrete confirmation of her future involvement in the franchise, Charlize Theron certainly didn't shoot the possibility down. And considering where her character left off at the end of the last film, smart money says Cipher will show up to complicate things for the family once again.

Charlize Theron's Cipher was the main antagonist of The Fate of the Furious, and was able to manipulate Vin Diesel's Dom into betraying his crew and doing her bidding. A cyber terrorist with a penchant for psychological warfare, we saw as Cipher attempted to start a nuclear war, while also holding Dom's ex-girlfriend and hither to unknown son hostage. This allowed her to use the group's leader against them, and she very nearly got away with it. Additionally, it was revealed that Cipher was involved in many of the events of previous films, making her role seem all the more important.

But Cipher's plans came crashing down when Deckard Shaw joined forces with his former enemies, and saved Dom's son. With his new family safe, the group was able to unite against Cipher's plans. Unfortunately, she didn't get arrested or captured, instead escaping to commit villainy another day.

This ending left the door wide open for Charlize Theron to return to the franchise, and I'm sure that early conversations about another appearance happened while The Fate of the Furious was filming. Considering what a financial and critical success the film was, I can't imagine that Theron would be against taking another paycheck to play the villain. Between Mad Max: Fury Road and Atomic Blonde, she's basically the number one female action star out there now, and it would be great to see her in one of the most popular action franchises again.

The Fate of the Furious is currently available for home release, and you can catch Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde on July 28, 2017. In the meantime, check out our 2017 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
