Why Henry Cavill Isn't Wearing A Fake Mustache In Mission: Impossible 6, According To The Director

Henry Cavill in The Man from UNCLE

If you're a fan of Henry Cavill from the DC Extended Universe or The Man from U.N.C.L.E., then you're used to seeing him primarily clean-shaven, but there have been times when he has had to grow facial hair for a role, like when he was on The Tudors. That time has come once again, as Cavill will be rocking an impressive mustache for next year's Mission: Impossible 6. Whether Cavill is fond of his new upper lip decoration or would like it gone as soon as possible, he's keeping it for the long haul. Because according to director Christopher McQuarrie, it would impossible for Cavill to wear a fake mustache during Mission: Impossible 6's production because a facsimile wouldn't be able to endure the action Cavill is being put through. According to McQuarrie:

Following the initial amazement at the mustachioed Henry Cavill in the Instagram photo Christopher McQuarrie posted in early June, the actor's mustache has drawn renewed interest over the last 24 hours following a report about the Justice League reshoots. Among the many interesting tidbits sprinkled in the article was that Cavill cannot shave his mustache due to his work on Mission: Impossible 6, so his mustache will need to be erased using CGI to keep Superman usual clean-shaven self. Evidently there was a fair number of people wondering why Cavill couldn't just shave off the mustache, complete work on Justice League and then don a fake mustache for Mission: Impossible 6, so McQuarrie went on Twitter to address why that isn't possible.

If nothing less than some light stapling would ensure that a fake mustache would stay put on Henry Cavill during Mission: Impossible 6, it would seem that the British actor will be put through the ringer in the upcoming blockbuster. Beyond the standard action scenes one expects from these movies, maybe Cavill's character will also have to go underwater or deal with powerful gusts of wind. A fake mustache couldn't endure such forces, but by having the real deal on his face, Cavill can go about his day without worrying about where his faux facial hair went after shooting a scene.

No plot details for Mission: Impossible 6 have been revealed yet, but in addition to Henry Cavill, some of the new actors who have been brought aboard for the next installment of the long-running movie series are Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby, Sian Brooke and Frederick Schmidt. The familiar faces who will return alongside Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt are Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Simong Pegg as Benji Dunn, Michelle Monaghan as Julia Meade-Hunt, Alec Baldwin as Alan Hunley and Sean Harris as Solomon Lane. There's no word yet on if Henry Cavill's mustache will receive its own credit.

Mission: Impossible 6 will be released on July 27, 2018.
