Cloverfield is one of the most mysterious film franchises in Hollywood right now. While the first movie just advertised as a weird-looking found footage monster movie, its sequel, 10 Cloverfield Lane, was initially conceived as a standalone movie called The Cellar, and it was only until the movie was two months away from release that it was revealed to be a follow-up to the original Cloverfield. The currently-untitled third Cloverfield movie, originally called God Particle, has followed suit with this stealth marketing and keeping details close to the proverbial chest. Cloverfield 3 is now expected to arrive in on April 20, but now there's word that not only has a Cloverfield 4 been greenlit, but it's already been shot and will be released this October.
Last year, it was announced that Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams' production company Bad Robot had hired Son of a Gun director Julius Avery to direct a World War II thriller called Overlord. There was speculation at the time that this movie might tie into the Cloververse, and nearly a full year later, Slashfilm has confirmed that Overlord will be the fourth entry in the Cloverfield franchise. If Overlord is following in the footsteps of 10 Cloverfield Lane and Cloverfield 3, that likely means that its official title won't be Overlord for much longer, though given how the marketing for its predecessors has been, we presumably won't know what it will be until just a few months before it comes out.
As was previously revealed, Overlord follows two American paratroopers who are dropped behind enemy lines in Normandy on the eve of D-Day to carry out a mission that is vital to the invasion. However, the soldiers soon learn that the Nazis occupying the the village are harnessing supernatural forces. The main cast includes Wyatt Russell, Jovan Apdeo, Iain de Caestecker, Jacob Anderson, Bokeem Woodbine, Pilou Asbæk and John Magaro. Rather than being direct sequels to one another, each Cloverfield movie is only loosely tied to what's come before, but with Overlord taking place decades before any of the previous movies, it will be interesting to see how exactly it connects to the others. Given that the Japanese company Tagruato (and its subsidiaries) has been the primary connective thread across this series, perhaps it will have something with the Nazis' evil schemes.
Overlord, a.k.a. Cloverfield 4, will be released on October 26, although given the recent news that Netflix might obtain Cloverfield 3, it remains to be seen if Overlord will still have a theatrical release or if it will also find a home at the streaming service. As we wait for more news about this project, look through our 2018 release schedule to learn what other movies are coming out this year.
