Avengers: Infinity War Has Officially Hit The $2 Billion Mark
Avengers: Infinity War has been on the way to $2 billion for some time. However, as the movie spends longer and longer in theaters, it makes less and less every day, which means it has been a long wait for the new Marvel flick to reach such great heights. However, all of that is changing this week, as Avengers: Infinity War has finally hit the big milestone. It's one of several movies that should make this a big box office year for Disney.
The most recent set of box office numbers has the movie at $2,001,136,398, and the numbers were confirmed this morning. The most recent numbers we had yesterday for the flick were only $528,222 away from the box office milestone, so the fact Infinity War has now reached those great heights is not a real surprise, especially as the movie has been averaging at least a million per day in domestic day-to-day grosses. It's not that Avengers: Infinity War will be the first movie to cross the $2 billion mark -- far from it. However, $2 billion at the worldwide box office is still a really big deal for a movie. Currently -- and not counting for inflation -- Avengers: Infinity War ranks fourth in all-time movie box offices, as well.
Right now, Avengers: Infinity War lags behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which brought in $2,068,223,624 during its run worldwide, with that movie catering to men in the 18-49 demographic. It's still quite a ways off from the #1 and #2 slots, however. Titanic's worldwide gross is $2,187,463,944 and Avatar's is even higher, at $2,787,965,087. Of course we are only talking worldwide box office, here, as well. Domestically, Avengers: Infinity War has not been as successful as Black Panther was earlier this year. The Ryan Coogler film brought in $699,389,760 domestically whereas Infinity War has only done $655,136,398 domestically so far. That number should increase as the movie continues its theatrical run, but may not catch the success of Black Panther in North America.
Still, $2 billion is a gigantic milestone, and it's cool that the Marvel flick got there. Another fun milestone? Avengers: Infinity War is tied for the fastest movie to hit $2 billion, getting to the milestone number in just 47 days. It's also the first movie to hit the milestone during the summer, as other flicks in the $2 billion club have been holiday movies. Big summer hits, including Jurassic World, have not hit $2 billion during their runs. It's been clear since the Marvel movie hit theaters that the superhero team-up was going to be a special one for the MCU. The two-movie event franchise has been touted as a game-changer for Marvel, and will shake the way things are done as the MCU heads into Phase 4.
A lot of the upcoming Marvel projects are still being kept under wraps, and the studio isn't even being open about what Avengers 4 will be called. (Here are 6 possibilities.) Regardless, we do know more about what is coming in the rest of Phase 3 and in Phase 4, and you can check that out with our full guide. In the meantime, sequels don't always do as well, but Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom should give the flick a run for its money later this month.
