Last week we learned that Idris Elba would be joining the Fast and Furious spinoff movie starring The Rock as the film's villain. Dwayne Johnson took to social media to welcome the newest member of the franchise family. Apparently, the pair of actors have been wanting to work together for some time, and have now found the right project with the two being pitted against each other in Hobbs and Shaw that will see Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprise their Fast and Furious roles to take on Idris Elba.
While the initial report was that Idris Elba was in "final negotiations" to play the villain in the upcoming spinoff, it would seem that Dwayne Johnson is confirming the role by using Instagram to welcome Idris Elba to the film. Johnson says he's ready to "dance" with Elba, and I'm certainly ready to see that. These two are some of the most fun actors working today and seeing them go up against each other just sounds like the most fun in the world. Adding Jason Statham to the mix is just icing on the cake.
While we know that Idris Elba will play the villain, there's not a lot that we know about who that character will be. One rumor gives the character the name Mr. Null, who as described as a British International Terrorist. Elba is British, so as far as that goes, the rumor has one point in its favor.
Hobbs and Shaw is the first movie outside of the main Fast and Furious franchise and it makes one wonder just what the new film will have in common with the series, and in what ways it may make a point to be different. One certainly expects we'll see some cool cars driven very fast in the movie, but perhaps less often. If the spinoff really wants to differentiate itself, the way it uses cars would be the most obvious way. Otherwise, the plan may be to make the spinoff as much like the main series as possible, just with fewer characters.
In addition to the announcement that Idris Elba was joining the new spinoff, we learned that Vanessa Kirby is joining the film as a third Shaw sibling, and rumors indicate that the new film will introduce us to Hobbs' family as well. If so, there's a lot more casting left to announce before the movie goes before the cameras, which is set to happen very soon.
