Should Avengers: Endgame Have Kept The Scene Explaining What Happened To Gamora?

Gamora in the deleted scene

Avengers: Endgame arrived back in April, but new details about the massive blockbuster are still coming out everyday. The Russo Brothers' set of movies did the impossible, utilizing a huge ensemble cast and crafting a story that was both character driven and full of outrageous spectacle. Endgame is set to arrive for home purchase shortly, complete with exciting special features.

A deleted scene from Avengers: Endgame was recently revealed, which showed the heroes' reaction to Tony's sacrifice in the movie's final battle. Heroes from multiple franchises all kneeled to show their respect for Iron Man's last heroic action in a powerful but deleted moment. But the brief sequence also revealed Gamora's fate as the 2014 version of the Guardian left the field of battle to places unknown.

What happened to Gamora was a big mystery following Avengers: Endgame, with some fans even worried that Tony snapped her out of existence when he destroyed Thanos and his forces. Peter Quill was shown searching for her aboard The Benatar, but the deleted scene actually would have revealed her fate earlier. As a reminder, you can check it out below, from USA Today.

I'm not crying, you're crying. In addition to giving Iron Man a pre-funeral sendoff courtesy of the MCU's heroes, this brief scene showed that Gamora survived the final battle, and departed while the other characters were focused mourning Tony Stark. Just where she is going remains a mystery.

The cut scene from Avengers: Endgame is indeed powerful, although you can understand why it might have bene cut for time. Plenty of time is spent memorializing Iron Man during the film's end. After Pepper and Peter's emotional first reaction, Tony Stark is also given an epic funeral scene from his lakefront home. The service was star-studded, with nearly ever major character from the shared universe appearing in black to mourn his sacrifice, and the bravery that brought the dusted back to life.

Then again, revealing Gamora's fate would have solved one of the overarching questions of Avengers: Endgame. While we still don't know where Gamora was heading, moviegoers would at least have known she was alive. So even if the full scene is cut, there might have been an opportunity to keep the shot of Zoe Saldana's signature green character walking away from the battle.

It should be fascinating to see what comes next for Gamora, whenever Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finally makes its way to theaters. At the final moments of Endgame, the full group of heroes, including Nebula and Thor, was shown returning to space in an attempt to find the green girl. She must be out of sorts, stranded in the future and free from the clutches of her father's abuse. But she doesn't know the Guardians or even have the a real relationship with future Nebula, so it makes sense that she might want to get out of there once the dust settled.

It's currently unclear when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will arrive in theaters, as it wasn't listed in the schedule for Phase Four. But given James Gunn's involvement in The Suicide Squad, it stands to reason. The next installment in the MCU is Black Widow on May 1st, 2020.
