Why Terminator’s Edward Furlong Was ‘Bummed Out’ About His Dark Fate Role

Edward Furlong in Terminator 2

Spoilers ahead for Terminator: Dark Fate

The Terminator franchise is sci-fi royalty, particularly James Cameron's original set of movies. Terminator 2 is widely considered the strongest entry in the property, so it made fans very happy that Dark Fate was a direct sequel to T2. This brought back the likes of Cameron, Linda Hamilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and even John Connor actor Edward Furlong. Although it seems Furlong was bummed about the size of his role.

Edward Furlong and Linda Hamilton were reunited for the very first scene of Terminator: Dark Fate. Picking up thee years after the events of Terminator 2, we follow Sarah and John living happily in Guatemala. But a T-800 Terminator suddenly appears and kills John, despite Judgement Day being avoided. Now Furlong has broken the silence about his brief role, which featured the 42-year old actor. He said:

They smoked my ass! That was the role. I did it for a day – I shot for one day. And, yeah, we did some CGI. They paid me. So, I mean, ya know. It kinda bums me out. Cause I’d love to do a whole one and make a shit-ton of money. I would love to do more, but we’ll see what happens.

Despite being away from the Terminator franchise for decades, it looks like Edward Furlong was chomping at the bit to re-enter the world for Terminator: Dark Fate. It's just not a meaty of a role (or paycheck) that he would have really liked. But who knows what's in store for the future?

Edward Furlong's comments at a recent convention (via Youtube) make a great deal of sense for those of us who went to theaters and saw Terminator: Dark Fate. John Connor had very brief screen time, although it was thrilling to see Furlong and Linda Hamilton de-aged through cutting edge technology. It turns out that Furlong worked on Tim Miller's blockbuster for just one day, voicing and playing John before movie magic made him look like a teenager again.

John death was seemingly written on the wall ahead of Terminator: Dark Fate's release, as he wasn't listed as a main character for the movie. It's hard to imagine a dedicated mother like Sarah Connor somehow separating from her son, so theories began swirling about his possible demise. And that's exactly what happened, with grief motivating Sarah-- especially when she's brought face to face with his killer T-800/ Carl.

But Edward Furlong would still like to appear in the Terminator sometime in the future, playing his most iconic role. Unfortunately, there's no guarantee that another sequel will ever happen. Because despite the hype and cast attached to Terminator: Dark Fate, the blockbuster failed to perform at the box office. And if the inclusion of Linda Hamilton and James Cameron isn't enough to get moviegoers in seats, perhaps the franchise has finally reached its own Judgement Day.

Terminator: Dark Fate is still in theaters now. Be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies. And our 2020 release list to look ahead toward the New Year.
