Caitlyn Jenner on I Am Cait

In the past, hosts of late-night shows banked on laughs from gender-normative jokes about Bruce Jenner, whose changing appearance on Keeping Up with the Kardashians had tabloids asking questions. Now, as Caitlyn Jenner, the reality television personality is letting people know those insensitive jokes were no laughing matter. During a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Caitlyn Jenner brought up the subject and even got an apology. Watch the interaction here:

The former Olympic athlete was on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote her controversial memoir, The Secrets of My Life. When the topic of humor came up, Jenner mentioned jokes regarding her gender transition. Jenner said,

It had been hammered all over the media for the longest time. In fact, guys like you [were] making some jokes.

Caitlyn Jenner emphasized the words "some jokes," indicating the abundance of cracks entertainers took at her expense during the first half of her transition. When Jenner was keeping the news a secret, she took a lot of heat from comics, who teased Jenner for having feminine looks modified by plastic surgery.

Bruce Jenner publicly announced his decision to transition genders in 2014. Then in 2015, Caitlyn Jenner stepped out on the cover of Vanity Fair, and many people who once made jokes about her looks realized the error in their ways. For example, Jimmy Kimmel does not seem to make gender-normative jokes at Jenner's expense anymore. He owned up to his former thoughtlessness and teased,

We didn't know what was happening! We thought you were just vain.

Then Jimmy Kimmel quickly apologized for his past insensitivity and said,

Sorry about that, by the way.

At first, Caitlyn Jenner laughed and teased Jimmy Kimmel for apologizing now that times have changed. But then Jenner graciously accepted Kimmel's apology.

In the interview, Caitlyn Jenner indicated she does not want to be the representative of the transgender community as a whole. She said,

Every story is a different story. Every journey is a different story. I am not a spokesperson for the trans community. I am only really a spokesperson for my journey, and then [I] take my platform, which I have, and see if I can make a difference in the world.

The subject matter of the interview softened when Caitlyn Jenner talked about how Jimmy Kimmel lives across the street from her supermodel daughter, Kendall Jenner. Caitlyn Jenner urged Kimmel to keep an eye on Kendall Jenner's house, but Kimmel said the only thing he sees happening there is the appearance of clothes. The moment was a nice reprieve from the touchy issue of painful punchlines from the past.

It is great Caitlyn Jenner is moving forward. Transgender issues have a long road ahead, so it is good to see dialogue happening.
