Jennifer Lopez might still be on the fence about whether or not returning to American Idol is the right call, but her fellow judge Steven Tyler apparently didn’t need that long to make up his mind. Citing his dedication to Aerosmith and his need to bring “rock back”, the frontman released a statement today saying he had a blast but is officially finished with the singing competition.

If Lopez follows him out the door, it’s entirely possible Randy Jackson, who has sat at the table during every season, will follow her, leaving the hit show with a completely clean slate to start over. Right now, that’s all a big if; so, for the time being, let’s focus on the pros and cons of Tyler leaving. As a beloved lead singer and a household name, he brought swagger, charisma and buzz to the show when he first joined two years ago. It’s tough to be relevant and popular for decades, and with Aerosmith still selling out stadiums, his perspective always felt earned and pointful.

Unfortunately, Tyler also had a tendency to occasionally phone it in, offering little in the way of real criticism. He was sometimes seen making eyes at the younger female contestants, and his bantering never quite felt in sync with the other judges. In the end, I’ll miss him a bit, but I do think it’s probably in the show’s best interest he goes his own way now with nothing but smiles and good vibes.

What do you think? Was it time for Steven to go, or do you think he should have stuck around for another season? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
