Katie Couric Opens Up About College Bulimia Struggles

Prior to the debut of Katie Couric’s new show, the longtime host said she’d be willing to occasionally talk about her personal life but only within the context of the day’s topic. Perhaps more than any other episode, this afternoon’s sitdown proved that. During her chat with X Factor judge Demi Lovato and eating disorder specialist Cynthia Bulik, Couric revealed she suffered from bulimia as a much younger woman.

The beloved anchor’s troubles reportedly began during college and lasted, at least in some capacity, until about two years after her graduation. ABC News posted a partial transcript of her reveal, and you can take a look at a portion below…

”I know this rigidity, this feeling that if you eat one thing that’s wrong, you’re full of self-loathing and then you punish yourself, whether it’s one cookie or a stick of gum that isn’t sugarless, that I would sometimes beat myself up for that.”

Lovato has long been open about the eating-related struggles she’s gone through. With specialist Bulik on the panel as well, these women were clearly going to talk about the sensitive topic on the show today, but the fact that Couric offered her own contribution made it that much more powerful. Younger viewers need to know people have been in their position before, and they need to know it can get better.

Bravo to Katie for being honest. Here’s to hoping her message helped a few people out there, and if it generated some suddenly loyal viewers in the process, even better.
