How Archer Season 7 Will Be Different

Those who remember the season known as Archer Vice already know that the animated series Archer is no stranger to changing formats – and it seems that the show will once again be heading in a new direction for its seventh year of existence. We know this because creator Adam Reed announced at San Diego Comic-Con this afternoon that the program is going to be “refreshing” in its upcoming episodes, and introducing a whole lot of new elements for our favorite super spies to play with.

At Comic-Con today, Reed was joined by producer Casey Willis, H. Jon Benjamin, Jessica Walters, Aisha Tyler, Judy Greer, Chris Parnell, Amber Nash, and Lucky Yates on stage for the annual Archer presentation, and it took little time at all for him to announce that the series would be undergoing some very interesting changes for its next episodes. Asked by moderator Liz Shannon Miller what we could expect from the seventh season of the show, the showrunner explained,

We are a little behind schedule this season, because we are refreshing Archer for Season 7. It’s not a reboot, but we are creating tons and tons of new elements: wardrobe, weapons, cars, the sets… So we’re drawing so much that we’re a little behind, and we don’t have the season premiere as we usually do. Not one to spoil it all, I can say that it’s more sexy and dangerous than ever. Or equally as sexy and dangerous.

Obviously Adam Reed was unwilling to go into details as to exactly what why Archer is changing, but it will be interesting to see just how influential on the entire show the changes will be. The gang got out of the spy game two years ago and into the business of international drug smuggling, so it’s hard to imagine that anything is really off limits, and the potential for exploration is infinite. For all we know, the new outfits, weapons and vehicles could be a reference to the fact that Archer, Lana, Cyril, Cheryl, Mallory, Krieger, and Pam will be heading to Mars in the next season.

While more information will be needed before I can accurately gauge how I feel about this suggested change, I must admit that I’m of two minds about it. On the one hand, Archer built itself up on its international espionage approach and it would be unfortunate if the series were to move away from its fun/ridiculous retro spy vibe. On the other hand, though, one can’t fault the writers from working to find ways to keep the material fresh year after year.

How do you feel about these suggested changes for Archer? Are you on board? Hit the comments with your thoughts.
