That Time Stephen Colbert Broke Up A Fight At SNL

While Stephen Colbert has been a huge TV personality for the last several years thanks to his work on Comedy Central and now The Late Show on CBS, it's a slightly lesser known fact that he was also a guest writer on Saturday Night Live back in the day, notably doing voice work for "The Ambiguously Gay Duo" sketches. Recently, actor and former SNL intern Wyatt Cenac joined Stephen Colbert on The Late Show and the two reminisced about the time Stephen Colbert was forced to break up a fight between Cenac and Norm MacDonald.

Apparently, back in the day, Stephen Colbert and Wyatt Cenac used to hang out on the set of SNL after hours, mostly because it was cool to simply be on the set of the iconic late night show. During some of these late night sessions, pick-up soccer games would sometimes commence in the hallway, and during one particularly heated session, Cenac and Norm MacDonald got into a fight. Here's what Stephen Colbert had to say:

I was a guest writer there and I would jump in on these soccer games. It would be like three o'clock in the morning, and people are like on deadline trying to get their scripts done for Saturday. It was like Friday night. I was hanging out with Norm because sometimes I would sit in and write on 'Weekend Update,' and Norm got into a huge fight one night in the soccer game. And it was with you!... And Colin and I pulled you two apart.

Wyatt Cenac also contributes to this story, adding details about his memory of the hallway fight, noting that he was 19 and an intern, and definitely "didn't understand stations of power." Norm was also having a bad night because he had just quit smoking. Cenac accidentally clipped Norm in the soccer game and set him off, and the two ended up in a shoving match in the hallway. It was up to Stephen Colbert, and Colin Quinn---who was also in on the soccer game---to pull them apart.

Hilariously, Stephen Colbert and Wyatt Cenac met again years later, and Colbert told him the story of the hallway soccer fight without realizing that Wyatt Cenac was the young intern who was actually involved. The two officially re-met while doing some work on The Daily Show, and now both have successful individual careers. Stephen Colbert's the face of CBS' late night, and Wyatt Cenac is set to head up the new comedy People of Earth, which hits TBS' schedule on Monday, October 31 at 9 p.m. ET.
