Sarah Hyland Defends Sharing Modern Family Plot Spoiler

Sarah Hyland as Haley Dunphy, Claire Bowen as Claire, Ty Burrell as Phil on Modern Family on ABC

Don't hate the player, hate the game. Sarah Hyland was just doing her job for Modern Family, promoting a preview story before tonight's Season 10, Episode 11, "A Moving Day." It just so happened, though, that the clip she was told to promote contained a significant plot spoiler.

So spoiler warning for anyone who doesn't want that intel before watching the January 9 episode.

Still here? Here's what Sarah Hyland had revealed about her pregnant character, Haley Dunphy:

That tweet was quickly followed by fans asking why she had to reveal that spoiler. Here's Sarah Hyland's response:

Hey, if she's asked to promote the clip, she has to do it! People magazine also got complaints for tweeting out that spoiler. Maybe ABC shouldn't have picked that particular clip to tease the episode?

But the twins are out of the bag now. The clip People shared showed pregnant Haley at the doctor's office with her mom Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen) and boyfriend Dylan (Reid Ewing). The doctor told Haley she heard two heartbeats, and the confused Haley immediately thought the baby had two hearts. When it was explained, no, she was carrying twins, Haley insisted it must be a mistake.

Haley: I can't have twins. That's twice as many babies as we were expecting.Dylan: Yeah, they'll outnumber us.Haley: How are they going to fit in our place? How are they going to fit in my body? One is always going to be awake. I'll never sleep again. And those double strollers are so wide, I can say goodbye to ever shopping in a boutique!

The clearly overwhelmed Haley is shown telling her mom she's in way over her head. Claire attempts to make her feel better, promising she'll be around more often to help, but also warning that being a mom is very complicated.

One of the big themes of "A Moving Day" is the complication of adulthood. In the episode, Claire and Phil Dunphy aren't convinced that Haley and Dylan can make it on their own as they move them into their new apartment before the baby arrives. That's what the ABC synopsis said, but now we know it's before the babies plural arrive.

Modern Family Season 10 is returning from winter break with this episode, so the twins news will come in the first episode of 2019. How many more episodes are ahead? That's the big question. There was initially thought that Season 10 might mark the final season. But the cast and ABC recently took a big step toward a potential Season 11.

Recent seasons of Modern Family have had at least 22 episodes. So Wednesday, January 9's Episode 11 -- airing at 9 p.m. on ABC -- should mark the halfway point of this season, final or probably not-so final. Here's what else is on TV during the busy midseason 2019 schedule.

Gina Carbone

Gina grew up in Massachusetts and California in her own version of The Parent Trap. She went to three different middle schools, four high schools, and three universities -- including half a year in Perth, Western Australia. She currently lives in a small town in Maine, the kind Stephen King regularly sets terrible things in, so this may be the last you hear from her.
