The entertainment world has seen a number of comebacks over the past several years, and this has definitely been the case on the small screen. Actors are finding various ways to revamp and revive famous properties, reuniting with former co-stars in the process. One of the latest stars to do this is Last Man Standing’s Tim Allen, who has joined with former Home Improvement colleague Richard Karn for a new reality competition show. And just recently, Allen opened up about why he wanted to reteam with Karn for the new series.
Tim Allen and Richard Karn are headlining History’s Assembly Required, a 10-part reality competition series that sees makers from across the country compete in at-home building competitions. On the surface, the show seems very reminiscent of Tool Time, the show-within-a-show that Allen and Karn’s Home Improvement characters hosted. And as Tim Allen recently explained to ET, it was this connection that made him want to reunite with Karn:
Many Home Improvement fans will likely remember that Tool Time saw Tim Allen’s Tim Taylor and Richard Karn’s Al Borland would demonstrate scenarios with various tools. Unfortunately, things would sometimes go haywire, as Taylor wasn’t always the most skilled handyman. Still, the show was beloved by audiences -- both in the show’s world and the real world.
In the case of Assembly Required, the reality show began as the brainchild of Tim Allen. His motivation for developing the show was his admiration for people who choose to repair things instead of replacing them. It’s an interesting concept, one that could certainly connect with viewers.
Tim Allen appears to be thrilled that Richard Karn agreed to star alongside him in the new show. However, Allen was initially hesitant to ask Karn if he’d sign on. Because the two actors still hang out socially, Allen thought it would be a bit awkward if he asked his old buddy to sign on and he ultimately rejected him. Luckily for him, Karn was more than willing to team up for another project.
Assembly Required is sure to have something for viewers who love fix-it shows. Not only that, but Home Improvement fans are sure to get a kick out of seeing Tim Allen and Richard Karn together again decades after the show’s finale.
Tune into Assembly Required when it premieres on History tonight at 10 p.m. ET.
