Katy Perry American Idol ABC

Warning! The following contains spoilers for the American Idol Hollywood Week episode that aired Monday, March 22. Read at your own risk!

American Idol ran through its duets in its latest episode, and viewers were treated to a night of some of the best duo performances this series has ever shown. As good as they were, however, even the most talented competitors stood little chance at eclipsing the massive duo Katy Perry teased late in the episode. For whatever reason, the pop singer name-checked Taylor Swift and suggested the two would do something incredible if they ever collaborated.

Now, for the casual American Idol viewer, that tease may not have meant much, but for fans of either singer, this would be huge. For anyone who may not have watched, check out what Katy Perry had to say after seeing many duos perform on stage that day.

I love that look from Luke Bryan because what even is that? Was that a look of understanding, or was he nodding because it felt like the polite thing to do? That aside, I suspect that Katy Perry intentionally baited both her fans and Taylor Swift's fans with that statement. Both fandoms have been waiting for these two to do something since they squashed their long-standing beef, so it was likely that a lot of people would freak.

There's also something a little extra special about Katy Perry's statement. If you counts out the exact number of words in the sentence she makes in the clip, you get 13. Hardcore Swift fans know the number 13 is one that has appeared in many elements of Taylor Swift's music, music videos, and release dates. Is it possible Perry deliberately used this wording as a nod to the number 13?

I'll be honest, I think it's more of a coincidence than anything, but I love the idea that Katy Perry and Taylor Swift meticulously planned a tease of some future collaboration on American Idol. If or when it happens, it will be funny to think back on this moment and wonder if it wasn't the plan all along. It also would be a great way for Perry to draw eyes to American Idol, hoping she'd talk more about working with Taylor Swift, and if that's the goal, then we can only wait and see what attention it brings in the coming days.
