By this point in Season 4, the CW’s Arrow has amassed quite a gallery of rogues. After Oliver gave up killing unless absolutely necessary way back in the beginning of Season 2, many of his bad guys are actually still alive with the potential to return. While this isn’t great for Oliver Queen and Co., it’s nice to know that some of the more epic villains are always waiting in the wings. Star Stephen Amell just so happens to have one in mind that he’d like to come back: Deathstroke.
Amell revealed his desire for the return of one of Oliver’s most formidable nemeses at the Heroes and Villains Fan Fest in New Jersey over the weekend. The Season 2 supervillain was one of Oliver’s most genuinely frightening bad guys, and he posed problems for our hero both on the action front as Deathstroke, as well as on the character front as Oliver’s friend-turned-foe. It’s no wonder that Amell wants him back. Here's how he put it, according to ComicBook.
Manu is a character, and Manu played a great character. And I really honestly think that Arrow has been missing something since he hasn't been around. I really do. He was a transformative villain. I would really love it if Deathstroke could keep being a part of the Arrow universe.
Ever since Wilson’s defeat back in Season 2, he’s been marooned on Lian Yu and left to rot in an A.R.G.U.S. prison cell. He did make an appearance in Season 3 when Malcolm Merlyn dropped Oliver and Thea on the island and unleashed Slade on them. Sadly, however, the Big Bad of Season 2 didn’t get to do much beyond chase the Queen siblings around. Amell and Deathstroke actor Manu Bennett were great, but Deathstroke could have been utilized more.
Manu Bennett happens to agree with that, and has publicly admitted that he was disappointed with how Deathstroke’s return was handled. Bennett’s dissatisfaction doesn’t bode well for Slade Wilson to be back in all of his terrifying glory, but certainly anything can happen.
Amell dropped a spoiler last November that there would be an upcoming iconic fight with a Wilson other than Slade, so we can probably at least count on a connection to the character, with the potential to bring back Slade at some point. Of course, considering the ridiculousness of the Season 4 flashbacks, we may learn that Flashback Oliver got into a fight with a volleyball and that is the Season 4 Wilson. He never said the fight was iconic to Arrow, and who can forget Tom Hanks’ companion from Castaway?
Okay, the next Wilson probably isn’t a volleyball. In fact, the next Wilson that Oliver will face is likely to be Slade’s son Joe. Joe is no Deathstsroke, but any connection to Bennett's Slade takes us one step closer to perhaps seeing him on our screens again. After all, Slade keeps his promises, and Oliver’s loved ones aren’t all dead yet.
Arrow airs on Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
