Bill Clinton Will Charm Us, Larry King, Sept. 5

You’d think Larry King, codgerly master of his own universe that he is, wouldn’t invite guests who are bound to outshine him. Yes, everyone watched the Paris Hilton interview for Paris, but those two are like shiny California oranges and musty New England apples-- or something. Not worth comparing.

With Bill Clinton coming on the show on September 5, though, you can bet ol’ Larry is going to have to take a backseat. The ex-prez will be on the show promoting his new book ‘Giving: How Each Of Us Can Change The World’-- you’re all welcome to make your own sexual innuendo jokes, but I’m not playing that game.

According to an article by the Environment News Service, the book, to be published the day before on Sept. 4 by Alfred A. Knopf, focuses on Clinton’s time doing humanitarian work in Africa, highlighting the work of the famous and non-famous alike.

"I've done my best in this book to demonstrate what I've seen firsthand through my foundation's work in Africa and around the world: that all kinds of giving can make a profoundly positive difference," Clinton said in the ENS article.

I know this isn’t the place for political prognostication, but you’ve got to wonder about the timing of this book regarding his wife’s presidential campaigns. With all the states threatening to move their primaries earlier and earlier, and the Senate about to reconvene for an ugly fight over the Iraq war, the whole race is about to get quite heated. Could Hillary benefit from Bill hogging the spotlight again, or will he, as her people fear, completely overshadow her?

Here’s what I know for sure: my dad watches Larry King every night, regardless of who’s on it, and will frequently grumble to me over the phone about having to watch Karl Rove or another Republican yammer on. At least I know when I call him that Wednesday, we’ll both have something positive to talk about. Now that’s what I mean by giving.
