PBS’ successful series, Downton Abbey premiered last Sunday to high ratings. Though the full season already aired overseas, those of us living in Region 1 have to wait a while before PBS gets around to distributing DVD copies. Unless you have a Region 2 DVD player or belong to Amazon Prime, the way to view the second season in the U.S. and Canada involves waiting each Sunday for the release of a new episode. The schedule allows that Season 2 will run each weekend until February 19, but if you are more impatient, fans will be able to nab DVD copies just a wee bit before the last few episodes air.

PBS distribution will release Downton Abbey Season 2 on Blu-Ray and DVD February 7. The program has tended to open each new season with a look at how a big event effects the household. Season 1 began just after the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic, and Season 2 is set amidst World War 1. With 556 minutes of content, Blu-Ray copies will run for $49.99 and DVDs will run for $44.99. You can preorder the items over at PBS or Amazon.

If you have already been watching the series during its Masterpiece timeslot, there is added incentive to buy the set if you are a fan. Three bonus segments will be included with both Blu-Ray and DVD copies. The first is called “House To Hospital,” which fittingly discusses the changes Downton goes through between Season 1 and 2. The second, “Romance in a Time of War,” discusses some of the romances within the series and fits them into a historical context of change. The third special feature is “Fashion and Uniforms.” This eleven minute extra will cover how fashions change due to uniforms and other needs during wartime.

Until the release hits, audiences can catch Masterpiece's Downton Abbey on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on PBS.
