Clement recently spoke with The Guardian to talk about some of his recent and upcoming work, as well as his thoughts about his time on The Flight of the Conchords. During the interview, he let slip that he is working on a multi-episode project with HBO, noting that the project was initially scheduled to come out this year, but then was postponed. Since those reading the article weren’t given much information about the comedy project, the rumor mill began swirling with the possibility that the HBO project might actually be a Flight of the Conchords reunion. It didn’t help that Clement also actually admitted he would love to have a Flight of the Conchords reunion during the very same interview he mentioned the HBO project.
“We talk about a movie every so often. Sometimes it feels like we lost a lot of impetus over the last couple of years. But Bret, James and me, we all want to do a musical. It would be good to do something all together… I miss playing Flight of the Conchords gigs.”
It’s easy to see how rumors regarding a Conchords reunion came about, but Clement took to Twitter last night to blatantly dispel those rumors. Basically, Clement's tweets boil down to there being no Flight of the Conchords episodes currently in the works.
Before this rumour gets out of hand - we are not working on a 4 ep Conchords show for hbo... https://t.co/q1607H5vg8— Jemaine Clement (@AJemaineClement) September 2, 2014
I am working on another idea with them though, hence the mix-up.— Jemaine Clement (@AJemaineClement) September 2, 2014
Flight of the Conchords was a fan favorite HBO comedy when it aired for two seasons more than five years ago. The show eventually ended on its own terms, due to the decisions of its creators and creative team, who reportedly had trouble writing all of the music necessary to pull off the series. I’m sure many fans would love to see more episodes than the 22 that aired on HBO, and a reunion isn’t without precedent. Just a couple of years ago, Clement met up with partner in crime Bret McKenzie to write a charity song for the organization CureKids. Perhaps another reunion will be in the cards down the road. If not, at least there’s Clement’s newest project to look forward to.
