For me the best days of SNL had nothing to do with Chevy Chase or Dan Akroyd or Eddie Murphy. Saturday Night Live was never better, never more magical, than when Phil Hartman stalked the stage in a wide assortment of character wigs. Hartman was hands down the most talented performer ever to appear on the show, and his tragic early departure from this world was one of those rare celebrity deaths that actually made me want to cry. Phil Hartman deserved all the stardom that Mike Myers has now, and while he’ll never have it, he’ll always have this: Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer.

Maybe I don’t know a good sketch when I see it, but I do know that this one’s funny. It’s true today just as it was in his time. Sitting around in my undies this morning I had a sudden craving for Hartman, and if you punch his named into YouTube this is one of the first things that pops up. I’d forgotten just how genius it was. Take a minute out of your day and celebrate the greatness of Phil Hartman. Watch Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer work a jury.
