Rob Lowe is headed back to television. The actor has signed on for Apocalypse Slough, a British series that is set to air on NBC in the US. He’s not the only American actor to join the series. His Parks and Recreation co-star Megan Mullally and The Office’s Jenna Fischer were also announced for Apocalypse Slough. Additionally, a few names from across the pond will also pop up, including Mathew Baynton, Joel Fry, Paterson Joseph and Pauline Quirke.
Apocalypse Slough was co-commissioned by Sky 1 and NBC. The 10-episode series is about an 8 mile-wide comet as it makes its way to Earth to wipe out mankind. The series will follow a group of people whose lives intersect as the comet approaches its destination. Lowe will play a “rebellious” priest from the Vatican named Father Jude. Fischer is signed on as librarian Rhonda, a woman who is sent to prison for a crime she was not actually involved with. According to NBC, Mullally is set to play an “unhinged white supremacist,” which sounds like a pretty crazy role for the former Will & Grace actress to play.
Deadline reports that all of the characters will come together toward the end of the world, meeting in the town of Slough to sit in front of a TV and watch the world end on television. Apocalyptic projects have been popular in recent years with Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and Melancholia both hitting the big screen, but somehow the network project Apocalypse Slough has managed to seem even more oddball.
Iain Hollands created the series and is serving as the lead writer and Michael Engler is directing the first two episodes. A slew of executive producers are also involved with the project, including Juliette Howell, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Lynn Horsford, Andrew Conrad, Cameron Roach and Lizzie Gray. Filming is expected to begin later this month and both Sky 1 and NBC are anticipating a premiere later this year. Currently, there’s no news on whether the show will hit the UK and US at the same time or whether the releases will be staggered out, as happens with the Downton Abbey UK and US premieres.
Rob Lowe is clearly a big draw with Apocalypse Slough. The man has been an NBC mainstay for quite some time, starring in Parks and Recreation until January of last year, when he left to pursue other projects. Since leaving Parks and Rec, he’s appeared in film projects like Sex Tape and starred in all of those funny DirecTV ads you’ve seen pop up over the last several months. There’s one below, because we know you can’t get enough of those.
Lowe is expected to reprise his role in the seventh and final season of Parks and Rec, so expect to see him back at the network well before Apocalypse Slough hits the schedule.
