Smallville Reaction: Checkmate

This weeks episode was great, it had everything that a good episode needs. It was heavily character driven and really focused on some key characters. the rundown is that green Arrow gets kidnapped by Tess, who escapes before they learn he is Oliver Queen. Waller shows just how bitchy she can be and I must say, Pam Grier is perfect for the role. Waller threatens to kill a kidnapped Chloe unless Clark gives up the names and locations of the other leaguers. All the while, J'onn lurks around investigating and being very secretive.

J'onn played a key role in this episode showing that he is as powerful as Clark and then some, we saw him use telepathy, shape-shifting, phasing, and his usual super strength, speed, and flight. I was more than pleased at how "extreme" (bad 90's comic joke) the Martian Manhunter was this week, he was kicking ass and wiping minds. J'onn is one of my favorite characters on Smallville and I like seeing him get more face time. Waller does stop him for a while with his only weakness, Oreos... I mean fire. J'onn gets his revenge though when he faces off against Waller at the end of the episode.

Green arrow had an interesting ride this week. After being kidnapped by Tess and some goons, he escapes and in a great little bit of dialogue Tess and Ollie learn each other's identities. The quote of the night has to be Ollie's constant "they're not tights" plead. Green Arrow had some cool exchanges with Tess, but was over-all just a heel this episode, until the last few minutes where he gives a bone chilling threat to Tess.

Tess was all over the place this episode: was she a good guy, a bad guy, or just looking out for herself? One thing is for certain, Tess has a sweet Adam West slide so when she slides down she comes out in a full-on disguise. Tess showed some emotion this week after learning Ollie's secret and being shunned after trying to help him. Chloe played the role of damsel in distress. First off, she starts the episode by flipping out because her internet was down or something like that. After that, she gets kidnapped by a nerdy doctor after snooping around about Belle Reve patients.

Waller is planning a war against the aliens and she needs all the super powered individuals on her side whether they like it or not. Waller even asks Clark to help protect his country from the aliens, there's gonna be egg on her face when she learns Clarks secret. Clark beats up guys in slow motion again only it was done a little different this time and frankly, it was awesome.

We're left with some important questions that I believe will really make this season great. Who is the Red Queen? How powerful is she, he or them? Who does Martian Manhunter work for?
