A couple of months ago, it was announced that one of the greatest novels in the history of literature was heading back down the TV miniseries road, as BBC Worldwide is teaming up with The Weinstein Company and Lookout Point for a massive adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. The previously cast Paul Dano and Lily James have been joined by a smorgasbord of actors to fill the plethora of roles that War and Peace has going for it.
Let’s look at all of the newly added actors now, according to Variety, along with the parts they’ll be playing.
Perhaps best known for her work on The X-Files, Gillian Anderson made a huge return to TV in the last couple of years with The Fall, Crisis and Hannibal. She’ll be playing Anna Pavlovna Scherer, the unmarried St. Petersberg socialite.
The prolific English actor Jim Broadbent has been in just about everything, it seems, from the Harry Potter films to Hot Fuzz to the recently released Paddington. He’ll star as the aging politician Prince Nikolay Bolkonsky.
Rebecca Front, known for her roles in comedy shows like Big Train, Knowing Me, Knowing You and The Thick of It, will take on the role of the impoverished Princess Anna Mikhaylovna Drubetskaya.
In the last year, Tuppence Middleton starred in the critically acclaimed The Imitation Game and the critically slaughtered Jupiter Ascending, and she’ll be reteaming with the Wachowskis for their Netflix series Sense8. She’ll play Hélène Kuragina, daughter of Vasili Kuragin and future wife of Pierre Bezukhov. (Spoiler?)
Scottish actor Kenneth Cranham, who was most recently seen in Maleficent and The Legend of Hercules, as well as the zombie drama In the Flesh, will play Uncle Mikhail Nikanorych, a distant relative of the central Rostov family.
Brian Cox has been all over TV recently, starring in the miniseries The Game and NBC’s The Slap, but we’re not quite sure who he’ll be playing.
Citadel actor Aneurin Barnard, who was in The White Queen and Cilla, will star as Boris Drebetskoy, the war officer son of Princess Anna and childhood pal of Countess Rostova.
Queen and Country and Glue star Callum Turner will play Anatoie Kuragin, the dashing and immature son of Vasili.
Theater actress Jessie Buckley, who starred most recently in The Tempest, has filled an unspecified role.
The Missing star Ken Stott, best known as Balin from the Hobbit films, was also added in an unnamed part.
The story of two aristocratic families coming together during wartime, War and Peace will be a six-part miniseries directed by Woman in Black: Angel of Death helmer Tom Harper. Principal photography just started, and the production will take place in Russia, Latvia and Lithuania.
