Sales figures might not get you all hot and bothered compared to news about upcoming games but this is still pretty impressive: Call of Duty 4 has sold over 10 million copies.

Infinity Ward's boss man Vince Zampella announced the military shooter had passed the ten mil mark yesterday in an interview with News.com. No console-specific sales figures were available but the Xbox 360 version was the highest- selling. Zampella also revealed that the Variety Map Pack released in April for Xbox 360 and PS3 versions has been bought by 1.5 million gamers.

Obviously there's other games that have sold this many copies but: a) it's a short list of games, b) this is a big leap for the franchise and Infinity Ward. The last Call of Duty game Infinity Ward made, Call of Duty 2, had only sold about 2 million by January 2008 after being on the market for a couple years. It's safe to say the expectations will be high for the series' fifth installment.

CoD5 will be developed by Treyarch, who alternates with Infinity Ward on the series. The rumor is that they'll bring the series back to World War 2, possibly somewhere in the Pacific theater. Will gamers have the same enthusiasm they had for CoD4 for yet another entry in the WW2 shooter genre, though? How many times can you fire a Thompson before it gets old?
