GTA 5, Spooky Games Dominate PlayStation Sales In October
October was a big month for the PlayStation line of consoles, with several of the year's biggest titles hitting the market alongside a nice crop of smaller hits. It's no surprise to see the likes of Grand Theft Auto V and Battlefiled 4 sitting atop the sales charts for the month, joined by some appropriately spooky fare for the Halloween season.
Each month, Sony takes a look back at the previous 30 days of sales for their various platforms, giving gamers an idea of what games grabbed everyone's attention, as well as revealing a few surprise inclusions from time to time.
As SCEA Social Media Specialist Justin Massongill points out in the post for October, the next time these types of figures pop up, it'll have figures for the PlayStation 4 in tow. Hard to believe, but we're only five days out from the launch of a new console. Let us know which PS4 games you think will move the most units in the comments below. Exclusives like Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack are sure to do well, alongside next gen versions of games like Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts. But don't forget about the smaller titles heading to PSN, like Contrast, Resogun and Tiny Brains. After dropping several hundred dollars on a new console, consumers might be more likely to pick up a few cheaper games to get them through those initial weeks following launch.
But that's all in the future. Today, we're taking a gander at the top-selling PlayStation games of October 2013, and here's what the leading five games in each category look like.
For PS3 and PSN games, Grand Theft Auto V and Battlefield 4 hold down the top two spots respectively. TellTale's latest offering, The Wolf Among Us: Episode 1 sneaks into the third spot, followed by NBA 2K14 and Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition. Dead Island went on sale for dirt-cheap right around Halloween, so it shouldn't really shock anyone to see it ranked so high.
Call of Duty: Black OPS II DLC dominated the add-ons section last month with Apocalypse, Vengeance and Nuketown Zombies Map taking the first, third and fifth spots respectively. Borderlands 2: Bloody Harvest sold the second best, with The Walking Dead: 400 Days in forth.
The Vita version of The Walking Dead shambled into the top spot for the portable console, followed by Killzone: Mercenary, Malicious: Rebirth, Lone Survivor and the ever-present Persona 4: Golden.
PlayStation Mobile is still going strong with more bite-sized offerings on the Vita and various cellphone models. This month's top five were, in order, Sola Radio, Beats Trellis, Hills of Glory: WWII, Scientific Electronic Calculator and Chaos Rings.
Fatal Frame II and the original Fatal Frame put everyone in the Halloween spirit as the top two Classics, followed by Crash Bandicoot, GTA: San Andreas and Metal Gear Solid.
Finally, for the PSP, Persona 3 Portable continues to dominate the top spot with Corpse Party and Corpse Party: Book of Shadows chilling a few spines in the two and three spot, followed by Star Wars: Battlefront II and GTA: Vice City Stories.
