If you own the PS3 version of The Last Of Us, you may not have to shell out another $60 for The Last Of Us: Remastered. Naughty Dog is considering discounts for the PS4 remake.

"We’re looking into the business model for all this and will post about this once we have input from all regions," Naughty Dog community strategist Eric Monacelli said on the PlayStation.Blog when asked whether Last Of Us PS3 owners with the Season Pass will get a price cut.

Last Of Us: Remastered updates the survival horror game with enhanced graphics. You can see the difference in visuals between the PS3 and PS4 versions in this side-by-side comparison. The PS4 re-release will also feature exclusive audio commentary by creative director Neil Druckmann and voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson. Rounding out the package are the game's three DLC packs.

There is precedence for discounts of this fashion. This fall many retailers allowed gamers to upgrade from PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed 4 and other fall releases to PS4 and Xbox One versions for as low as $9.99. The PlayStation Store was one of retailers offering those deals.

Still, not every next-gen re-release is available on the cheap. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for PS4 and Xbox One, for example, is $60 with no possible discounts. It offers an updated version of a game about as old as Last Of Us and a similar amount of extras as Remastered.

Selling Last Of Us: Remastered for $60 to people who never played the original game seems fair. You're getting one of the most acclaimed games of 2013 along with a lot of additional single-player and multiplayer. Not offering a discount to people who spent $60 on the PS3 game, or $80 on the game plus the Season Pass, would feel like milking though.

I imagine a lot of PS3 owners of Last Of Us would just pass on the remake altogether if there's no price reduction for upgrading. After all, the cloud streaming service PlayStation Now may make Last Of Us playable on PS4 later this year. Granted, the PS Now version of Last Of Us probably wouldn't include the bells and whistles of Remastered but would gamers pay $60 just for those extras? I'm not convinced of that.

Last Of Us: Remastered should arrive sometime this summer. Amazon lists a June 20th release date but Naughty Dog hasn't confirmed the launch date yet.
