Brett Ratner Not Doing Conan Yet

By Katey Rich: 2008-11-13 16:48:35
Brett Ratner Not Doing Conan Yet Remember a while back when we were all convinced Brett Ratner was on the verge of directing the planned Conan the Barbarian remake? Apparently even though the movie's producer, Avi Lerner, made the announcement, we should have all been a little bit skeptical. Patrick Goldstein at The Los Angeles Times sat down with Lerner, who admitted he talked up Ratner's participation a little prematurely.

"We still have a few obstacles," Lerner admitted. "Brett is only committed if we agree on a budget, on how to do the special effects and exactly where we'd shoot the film." And Ratner too won't confirm anything, other than that Beverly Hills Cop 4 is his first priority. "I am not doing Conan now. This is totally premature. For now, Conan is only a development deal. I have a deal at Paramount and I'm doing Beverly Hills Cop first, no matter what. Avi shouldn't be telling you or anyone else in the press what I'm doing."

Zing! Ratner does not seem like the kind of guy who puts up with rumors and hearsay, so I'm not surprised he's shutting the lid on this thing. You can't blame Lerner for wanting extra attention for his movie, but really, he could have avoided some headaches by getting his ducks in line. With Ratner still waiting things out, Lerner has moved on to trying to strike a cameo deal with Arnold Schwarzenegger, the original Conan. He offered him $1 million for one day's cameo, and even said they could shoot it in Sacramento; though Schwarzenegger is still hedging, Lerner assured Goldstein, "Don't worry--I'll approach him again. I don't give up that easily." We'll see if that tenacity with Ratner will get him to finally do the job.
