Terry Gilliam Giving Don Quixote Another Try

Terry Gilliam Giving Don Quixote Another Try Terry Gilliam, you are one tenacious bastard. Nearly a decade after the director's first attempt at a Don Quixote ended in disaster (and was memorably captured in the documentary Lost in La Mancha), the former Monty Python is at it again. Variety reports from Cannes that Gilliam is reviving the project The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, with plans to start filming it next spring.

If anything, the project sounds even more difficult this time around. Gilliam still wants Depp to star as a modern-day advertising exec who travels back in time and is mistaken by Don Quixote as trusty sidekick Sancho Panza. But Depp is about as busy as they come, and will have to do a lot of rearranging to make this one work. There's also no Don Quixote lined up to star at present, and I can't imagine there are a lot of actors who would immediately jump on board this one.

And yet, you have to admire Gilliam's dedication. He told Variety, "I'm not so much a filmmaker as someone who gets possessed by an idea and it doesn't leave me until I make the film. I commit myself to it so fully." After all, he survived the death of his lead actor, Heath Ledger, during the filming of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, and is now bringing the film to Cannes. Why should he let a little bad weather and a decade's lapse in filming get in his way this time?
