Danny DeVito may not have always taken on the best projects as a director, but he’s pretty consistently put out entertaining movies. Even movies like Duplex that looked like total duds wound up somewhat fun to watch. So when DeVito’s name is announced for a new movie, I tend to take notice.

Variety reports that DeVito will be returning to the world of the biopic with an unlikely subject: electronics mogul Eddie Antar, best known as “Crazy” Eddie due to his chain of stores that promised “insane” prices on electronics. I think just about anyone who grew up in the ‘70s or ‘80s knew about Crazy Eddie’s commercials (or some replica of them for some other company), but I had no idea his life was so interesting and full of conflict. Antar expanded his chain of stores to 43 stores before he took the company public, and then was caught skimming money, among other dishonest business maneuvers. Before his story was over, Antar fled the country, was extradited back, and fined and jailed. Sounds like the makings of a pretty good movie to me.

DeVito himself is no stranger to the biopic, having directed 1992’s Hoffa and producing on Jim Carrey’s Man on the Moon. Considering the success of both of those, Antar’s story sounds pretty promising. DeVito says Crazy Eddie himself will cooperate with the making of the movie. You have to wonder what that means coming from a guy who ripped off public stockholders, and made “insane” deals with his customers. Here’s hoping for an interesting development on Crazy Eddie.
