David Paymer Joins Chris Pine And Kevin Costner In Jack Ryan
David Paymer has become the latest actor to join the cast of Jack Ryan, the new action thriller from director Kenneth Branagh featuring the star character from Tom Clancy’s long series of spy novels. He joins a cast that already includes Chris Pine (as the titular hero), Branagh (as the main villain), Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley and Nonso Anozie.
Variety, which picked up the news about Paymer’s casting, says that the character actor will be playing the role of an American diplomat in the movie – though details beyond that are slim beyond that. The project is being produced by Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Mace Neufeld and Mark Vahradian and is currently in production.
Based on a script written by partially written by Adam Cozad, David Koepp, Anthony Peckham and Steven Zaillian, the film is the fifth title featuring the character after The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears. A prequel of sorts, the new movie is set before Ryan’s time as a spy for the CIA and instead sees him as "a stockbroker working for a billionaire in Moscow." The problem, however, is that said billionaire (Branagh) is actually quite evil and plans a terrorist attack that will shut down the United States’ economy. The project is being financed by Skydance and will be released by Paramount Pictures on December 25, 2013.
Paymer was most recently seen playing Jason Segel’s father in the comedy The Five-Year Engagement and has a recurring role as Judge Richard Cuesta on the series The Good Wife.
