After nearly a decade spent banging around television projects in supporting roles, actress Sarah Baker has landed a plumb role in a Warner Bros. comedy that, thanks to its tie to the current political landscape, is generating some heat.

Baker will play Zach Galifianakis’s wife in Jay Roach’s Dog Fight, according to Variety. The comedy, once known as Southern Rivals, centers around two politicians vying for an open seat in a small congressional district in South Carolina. Galifianakis’s rival on the other side of the campaign trail will be Will Ferrell, who said that while the comedy is focused on small-scale government, it will have big things to say about our nation’s current political system.

Chris Henchy and Shawn Harwell wrote the Dog Fight script for Roach, who cast Galifianakis in a small, scene-stealing role in Dinner for Schmucks. As for Baker, she doesn’t have a ton of big-screen experience. Though she got her start with a small part in Reese Witherspoon’s Sweet Home Alabama, she quickly transitioned to television work, where she contributed to Kath & Kim, The Office, Good Luck Charlie and Bones.

But, with all due respect to Ms. Baker, most people lining up to buy tickets to Dog Fight want to see Ferrell and Galifianakis in all of their foolish, man-child glories. And with Roach at the helm, I’m encouraged to believe that the movie will push the envelope of embarrassment, hopefully sullying America’s busted political system in the process. Look for Dog Fight, which is heading into pre-production, to reach theaters on Aug. 10, 2012.
