Frank Darabont Loves Tokyo Rose

By Ed Perkis: 2008-01-03 09:48:55
Frank Darabont Loves Tokyo Rose Frank Darabont has always seemed to be the Tim McCarver to Stephen King’s Steve Carlton. Three of his four movies since 1994 have been based on the Entertainment Weekly columnist’s books. Now it looks like Darabont is willing to step away from Maine and see a little more of the country. Not only is he still on course to do an adaptation of “Fahrenheit 451”, but it looks like he’ll take on the WWII icon, Tokyo Rose, as well.

According to Atonement writer Christopher Hampton, he is going to be writing a script for Darabont about the experiences of Iva Toguri D'Aquino, an American citizen who worked for a Japanese broadcaster during the war and was later convicted of treason in the United States. Hampton told Collider that the writer’s strike has put the project on hold but that he expects it to be on Darabont’s plate after Fahrenheit 451. According to Hampton, Darabont is looking to work on projects written by others so he can get a few more movies under his belt. Four movies in 13 years is apparently too slow a pace for him.

D’Aquino was in Japan visiting a sick relative during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. She couldn’t leave and got work as an announcer on a Japanese radio program. After the war, she was thought to be one of the “Tokyo Rose” announcers who broadcast anti-American propaganda to the troops. Put on trial in 1949, she was convicted and spent 8 years in jail. Ultimately, it turned out her trial was sort of a sham and she was pardoned in 1977. She died in 2006.
