When Fish Tank debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Indiewire called the film's star Katie Jarvis "the first major acting discovery of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival." Now the rest of the world can see what all the fuss was about-- http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118007256.html?categoryid=13&cs=1>Variety reports that IFC has picked up the film for distribution, with plans to release it on-demand and theatrically at the same time.

Fish Tank, which has been compared to Billy Elliott but without the uplift at the end, is about a 15-year-old girl (Jarvis) living in an England housing project, harboring a dream of dancing but falling into booze and bad decisions. It sounds grim and tough watching, but that's the kind of film IFC excels at getting audiences to see anyway. Anyone interested in great debut performances apparently must check out Jarvis, and director Andrea Arnold is being almost equally as heralded. I guess it's one of those films that's a tough sit but a good one all the same.
