Joss Whedon Reveals What He'd Do With Star Wars Episode VII
Joss Whedon is not working on Star Wars Episode VII. A lot of us wanted him to, and Whedon even did too, suggesting at one point that if it weren't for The Avengers, he would have put himself in the running for the job. And even though Whedon is busy both prepping The Avengers 2 and doing promotion for the release of his new Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado About Nothing, he's not too busy to follow the latest rumors about new Star Wars films.. and to disagree with the direction they're taking.
Talking to Digital Spy at SXSW about Much Ado, Whedon fielded an inevitable question about a giant franchise-- but surprisingly, it was about Star Wars and not Marvel. Asked which characters he'd want to see returning to the world, he had a surprising answer. See it for yourself in the video below:
"I wouldn't go back, I'd go forward." Even though Whedon has made his career with characters that existed previously-- from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Shakespeare's Beatrice and Benedick in Much Ado-- he's always had a forward-thinking attitude about them, coming up with stories and situations that even their creators might not have imagined. He also might just be a man smart enough to know when something can be topped; who can blame him for thinking that Han Solo is a character who simply can't come back no matter what?
One of the many fun things about the future of Star Wars is that, with many more movies planned, there's no way to really rule out which director might take over the series. Is Joss Whedon currently planning to direct a Star Wars movie? No. But 10 or 15 years from now he might get the chance… and based on how much thinking he's doing about it now, he'd be more than up for it.
