These days it seems like the only movies that get made anymore are the giant action blockbusters, and the small dramas designed to win awards. Sicario was one of the few films that seem to exist between the two factions. It was a film with a moderate budget and major name stars that was able to appeal to both the action movie crowd, as well as the awards shows. It was also a strong box office contender, and while Sicario may have gone against many of Hollywood’s standard procedures, there’s one that it will be accepting with open arms. The sequel.

The Hollywood Reporter recently did a profile on Black Label Media, the small production company that specializes in the mid-budget features like the original Sicario. During the interview, the team behind the company released a few details about plans for Sicario 2. According to Molly Smith, the studio is in full development on the follow-up and a draft of the script has been completed by Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the screenplay for the original film as well. In addition, Black Media partner Thad Luckinbill confirmed that all three of the original films leads, Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin, will be returning for the sequel. To complete the return of the original team, the studio is hopeful to get director Denis Villeneuve back as well, though that has not been finalized yet.

Sicario was nominated for three Academy Awards on top of its $80 million box office and overwhelmingly positive reviews. Without delving into spoiler territory, the end of Sicario is emotionally devastating, as opposed to being physically so, which was nearly the case. The movie leaves all the major characters in places where you simply can’t help but wonder what’s going to happen to them all next. Now, it appears that we’ll have an answer.

While they are, of course, remaining mum regarding the sequel’s plot, the third partner of Black Media, Thad Luckinbill, says that Benicio Del Toro’s character in the film was one that people really want to know more about, which he calls "a perfect foray for us to explore" which seems to imply he’ll be taking center stage in the planned Sicario 2.
We have no idea when we’ll see Sicario 2, however, The script is being called a draft, so it’s likely not quite ready yet. In addition, Benicio Del Toro is likely a little busy right now with a little movie called Star Wars: Episode VIII. As for Emily Blunt, she's one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood. But this report makes it sound like the sequel is happening. How excited are you to see Sicario 2?
