Terry Zwigoff Lives Happy Days

After adapting two graphic novels (Ghost World, Art School Confidential) and telling the most vulgar Santa story ever told (Bad Santa), director Terry Zwigoff is sampling some European flavor and taking on a French book.

According to Hollywood Reporter, he will direct an adaptation of “Happy Days” and write the script with Jerry Stahl (Bad Boys II.) The film is based at Warner Bros. and is being developed by Johnny Depp’s production company, Infinitum Nihil. "[He] asked me to do the film," Zwigoff said, and nobody turns down advances from Jack Sparrow. ”He said he chose me because I'm very Hal Ashby-like. I took that as a compliment. It's a very quaint, fantastical story.”

“Happy Days”, a novel by Laurent Graff, is about a thirtysomething man who decides to leave his wife and kids to check into a rest home. During his stay there, he develops a special bond with an old man fighting cancer, and he takes her on a special journey as her last wish. Doesn't sound too happy to me, but I'll see anything that the magnificent Ghost World helmer touches.
