Is It Wise To Team Up Batman And Superman?

Heading into this weekend, we all thought we knew Warner Bros plans for their DC Comics franchises. We all thought the success of Man Of Steel would lead to a sequel, which would lead into a Justice League film handled by director Zack Snyder. Well, it turns out that’s not the case. Thanks to the always lively San Diego Comic Con, we now know there’s a completely different plan in place.

Batman and Superman will team up for the newest entry in 2015 and down the road, they will likely team up again for a Justice League entry. In theory, by putting the big boys together in their own movie, the studio could figure out a way for them to co-exist that will shape the entire future of comic book movies. A world could be set up like the Marvel Universe in which the characters are able to either do their own thing and/ or team up without ever losing continuity.

There are perhaps no two characters superhero fans have ever wanted to see together more in a movie than Superman and Batman. The two shared a highly acclaimed series of comics back in the 1980s, and fans have salivated over the possibility ever since. In fact, a quote was even used from The Dark Knight Returns during the panel today, and if that aforementioned story is followed closely, these two might actually be more adversaries than buddies, at least for a large portion of the film.

On the one hand, it’s nice to see the studio swing for the fences. It’s nice to see a complete shocker bowl fans over at Comic-Con. Playing it safe is rarely the right call, and considering Marvel is eating up viewership right now, something radical needed to be done. On the other hand, however, there’s something very worrisome about this potential mash-up. Not only is it unclear whether Christian Bale would agree to return as Batman, it’s unclear whether the studio would have the balls to actually make the characters believable enough adversaries. Further, it’s unclear how the story would tie into Man of Steel and whether they would be able to make Batman and Superman seem evenly matched.

I want to believe in this team-up, but part of me is really worried this is a bad idea. What do you think? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
