Should American Idol End After This Season?

Earlier tonight, American Idol finalists Kree Harrison and Candice Glover threw haymakers at each other in the form of carefully chosen and well-rehearsed songs. Exactly which of the talented women will best the other is unclear, but among many fans, there was actually a far more nagging question going through their heads this evening. Would everyone involved be better off ending the show after this season?

It’s no secret the once beloved reality competition program has run into hard times this season. In fact, the show has received its worst ratings ever. Beyond that, the constant friction between the judges has also caused a stream of ugly headlines, and many observers have pointed to the increased emphasis on the judges as the very reason why viewers have largely given up.

To optimists, this season’s struggles are a disappointment but not a reason to abandon the concept. In fact, despite all the problems, Idol still remains one of the highest earning programs on television in terms of advertising dollars, and it’s still extremely competitive in its time slot. To pessimists, however, a show like Idol is better off going out with a bang rather than a whimper. Sure, the ratings aren't horrible, but they’re an embarrassment compared to what they once were. In addition with at least Randy Jackson leaving, the talent doesn’t even vaguely resemble what it once did.

The network definitely wants to bring Idol back, but a whole lot needs to happen before it gets to that point. Even if it doesn't come back, that doesn't mean it's the right call either. What do you think? Should tonight have been the last American Idol finale? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
