Iron Man is a movie adaptation of the popular Marvel comic book about a tortured, alcoholic billionaire with a heart defect. By wearing an special suit made of iron he keeps his heart pumping, and gets certain bonus super-powers at the same time.
Robert Downey Jr. as a superhero; an alcoholic superhero? I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I deserve to live in a world where such a movie exists. It's a casting choice so unbelievably perfect that Iron Man might actually have a chance to end up as the first superhero movie to win a legitimate acting Oscar. It's an idea so pure and good that if Paramount hadn't already confirmed it you'd think it would have to be completely fake.
Robert has reportedly already gotten himself in fantastic shape for the film, and has even gone so far as to grow the trademark mustache and goatee Tony Stark is known for. That's a good sign, since it means he's into it. Hopefully this isn't just a big superhero paycheck for him, but Downey has never seemed like the type to take big cash-in parts anyway.
Director Jon Favreau and his team have done the impossible: They've managed to find a way to make his Iron Man movie matter. Robert Downey Jr. is one of Hollywood's finest actors, and in his personal life he's battled a lot of the addiction issues which make Tony Stark such an interesting figure in the first place. Paramount probably sees it as a gamble, but it's a beautiful one. Makes you want to stand up and cheer. Mix in the great Terrence Howard, as Stark's friend Jim Rhodes and maybe, just maybe, Hollywood isn't evil after all.

Hello Josh,
I just have to comment on your great Iron Man preview. It is refreshing to read someone who sees Robert for the amazing talent that he is and for the wonderful person he is. He is definitely and actor's actor, the consummate professional and he is coming into a time where everyone is going to realize this. His life is good and he is happy and healthy.
I just saw a screening of "Fur" last Thursday and I can't stop thinking about it ....he is extraordinary as Lionel. He expresses more with his eyes than an ordinary actor could with 1000 words.
Thank you so much .... look forward to more of you articles.
2007 Just came. I have 2 wait another year? Im 2 big of a fan. I hope Rachel McAdams get the part because she is my favorite actress. 2008, oh yeah I will b turning 17!
As excited as you seem Josh, and esp given this preview is quite old and theres a new, incredibly awesoem trailer, im really shocked you dint add a "6" to the exite-o-meter scale, this movie is going to be unbelievable.
It's tempting to bump it up Kris. The new trailer is pretty great. Saw it in a theater with an audience for the first time last night in front of Resident Evil 3. People were really into it, lot of cheering.
The Excite-O-Meter is teetering. It may yet end up being bumped to a 5.
That excite-o-meter needs to go to eleven. Downey Jr, Howard, Bridges, Paltrow, Swank, Jackson. This could make those old past their prime critics goe "wow maybe there's something to these comics"
I've enjoyed the trailer for this movie, too, an intend to see it, but to me, it seems to lack its own distinct flavor that others like Raimi's SPIDER-MAN or even Ang Lee's HULK had. Raimi brought his frenetic blend of dark but ridiculous humor and pacing to SPIDER-MAN. Lee had the split-screen and ultra-saturated primary colors. Even Singer's X-MEN movies (not X3) and Mark Steven Johnson's DAREDEVIL had ultrarealistic interpretations and evident adherene to certain eras of the comics, respectively. I watch the Iron Man trailers and I feel like I'm watching the preview to a high-quality, but still another cookie-cutter action comedy with some cut-and-dry comic book imagery in the suit. I'm sure it will be fun and though I'm not familiar with Favreau as a director I'm confident he'll make Tony Stark / Iron Man an enjoyable character, but I wonder how effective the rest of it will be -- the psychology and comlexity that most Marvel characters have in terms of one flaw, be it Peter Parker's clutziness, Bruce Banner's repressed anger or, in Tony Stark's case, the alcoholism, which Favreau says in interviews isn't really a part of this film but, frankly, as an origin story, I have to wonder why they'd leave a character-defining trait like that out.
I heard that this movie doesn't really go into Stark's alcoholism that much--that might be saved for the inevitable sequel. Kinda sucks, really, because that plays a major role in Tony Stark's overall character
I am so excited about this, my dad is like all into comic book and stuff, and I am kindof into the whole superhero, thing, lol what am I saying I love them, I can't wait!!
