Could Missy Ever Return To Doctor Who? Here's What The Actress Says

Missy Michelle Gomez Doctor Who The BBC

Jodie Whittaker got a lot of attention for being the first woman to portray the Doctor on Doctor Who, but Michelle Gomez was showing that Time Lords could flip genders long before she arrived on the scene! Now, with Whittaker set to take on the role in Season 11, fans are wondering if there's a chance Missy could return to play the Doctor's gender-flipped arch-nemesis once again. Gomez teased fans that she may appear once again as the character, and explained why she might've have had a change of heart regarding her past decision to exit the series:

I think it's going to be really hard to shake this one off. Missy has made quite a big impression on me, and hopefully on the fans as well. She was such a great fit. Even though, for now, she has been laid to rest. I don't think she's ever going to be that far away.

Michelle Gomez revealed back in 2017 she would be exiting the role after deciding she'd like to exit the series alongside former Doctor Peter Capaldi. Doctor Who obliged, and in the Season 10 finale, had Missy seemingly killed off when her past male version of herself zapped away her regeneration ability upon learning she was an ally of the Doctor. The series left Missy stranded and dead on a ship full of Cybermen, although now this new information has indicated that might not have been what went down. Given that, Gomez could totally return to the role of Missy provided new showrunner Chris Chibnall will have her when the show returns for Season 11.

It sounds as though Chris Chibnall might have plans for Michelle Gomez to return to Doctor Who, as the actress indicated to Doctor Who Magazine (via Futurism) Missy will make a return to the show in some way. In a cryptic tease that reveals practically nothing to fans shocked by this information, Gomez said the following:

But I think that in many different shapes and forms, she will be back. I can't really say much more than that. I have never had this response to anything else that I've done, and I'm really grateful for that

Doctor Who is a show about time travel, so no matter how impossible Missy's future looks, her past is still alive and well. Of course, let's not forget the past Master killed the future Master, so there's a chance that Missy had a plan in place to prepare for her past self's supposed killing blow. Gomez might've also been referring to a Missy-led audio drama, which frequently taps fan-favorite characters for adventures outside of the show's universe. The only thing fans can really count on is that it sounds like Missy could be headed back to Doctor Who in some way, and if she is, all details will be revealed there.

Doctor Who is set to air Season 11 on BBC America this coming fall. For more information on other upcoming television shows, head on over to our midseason premiere guide.
